Sophie Boorman

BVetMed, MS, DACVS-LA

Following graduation from the Royal Veterinary College in 2016, Sophie moved to the US to complete internships at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky and New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania (the latter funded by a prestigious Thouroun scholarship). She then remained at New Bolton Center to complete a research fellowship in the Comparative Orthopedics Research Laboratory, where she developed a keen interest in orthopedic surgery and research.

Sophie then moved to Auburn, Alabama for a combined equine surgery residency and masters degree. During this 3-year program she authored over 20 publications, received 3 large research grants and presented research at several major international conferences. She was a two-time recipient of the Veterinary Orthopedic Society resident research award and her Master’s Thesis, entitled “The effect of concurrent and non-concurrent (delayed) administration of mepivacaine hydrochloride and triamcinolone acetonide on inflamed equine osteochondral and synovial explants in co-culture” was the recipient of the Auburn University Master’s thesis award.

Following her residency, she moved to Leesburg Virginia to work at Virginia Tech as an Assistant Professor of Equine Surgery – spending time on clinics seeing cases as well as teaching veterinary students, interns and residents. After a 2 year term at Tech, she elected to move back to the UK to spend more time with friends and family.

Sophie enjoys all aspects of equine surgery but particularly orthopedics including fracture repair and arthroscopy and soft tissue surgery including treatment of colic and laparoscopic procedures. She loves spending time with her patients and talking with clients and referring veterinarians and prefers a team-based approach to patient-care.

Outside of work she loves to travel, skiing, cooking vegan food, working out and is an associate editor of a scientific journal. She is looking forward to getting involved with a sailing club and learning to surf.
