Factsheet: Vaccinations

We can vaccinate horses for Tetanus, Equine Influenza (Flu) and Equine Herpes Virus. Each of these vaccinations have their own schedules as to when each vaccination is due.

Equine Flu vaccinations must be given according to the latest guidelines (BHA, FEI, British Eventing, British Showjumping, British Dressage and the Pony Club or any other umbrella organisation).

We encourage our clients to carefully check the updated guidelines from these organisations and please contact the office if you have any queries.

We also suggest that the horse has a couple of quiet days after vaccinations.

Tetanus

A course of three vaccinations is required before the horse would go onto biannual booster vaccinations.

  • Horses must be over six months before they can start the vaccination course
  • Foals younger than 6 months should have tetanus antitoxin to cover them until they start the tetanus course
  • First injection given
  • Second injection is due 4-6 weeks after the first vaccination
  • Third injection is due 6 months after the second
  • Every two years for booster vaccinations

Equine Flu and Equine Flu/Tetanus (combined)

A course of three vaccinations is required before the horse would go onto an annual vaccine.

  • Horses must be over six months before they start the vaccination course

  • Second injection given between 21 and 92 days after the first
  • Third injection is due between 150 and 215 days after the second
